1st XIII Rugby League 

The 1st XIII toughed out a grinding victory over Southern Cross campus 26-10 at home. Down 10-6 at halftime, coach Frank Fuimaono rallied the team who’s fitness in the end was the difference. Psalms Iosua (Year 13) has been a consistent performer for the 1st XIII for three seasons now with his positive attitude, infectious energy and enthusiasm making him a stand out for this team every time he takes the field. The 1st XIII hosts De La Salle at home this Wednesday and would welcome your support.

1st XV had their first real test of the season in their third round match against Auckland Grammar. 

The last time St Paul's tasted success against the powerhouses from Epsom was in 1999. A preseason hit out earlier in the season was the last time both teams met, with both schools winning a half each. 

With two wins to start the season, there was a sense of confidence within the camp that an upset was well within reach. However, playing Grammar at their infamous number 1 field is no easy feat. Going into the first half, and playing against the wind, Grammar played with intensity and speed, applying pressure from the start. They dominated the physical exchanges, forcing St Paul's into making errors inside their own half. Poor kicking gave Grammar opportunities to counter attack, and in a very slow and lethargic 25 mins, Grammar crossed the try line four times to sprint to a 31 nil lead. Early substitutions were made, with impact from the bench coming immediately with a try under the posts to Troy Fuimaono (Year 11), to take the team into halftime, 31-7 behind. The second half brought a more energetic St Paul’s playing with more ball in hand and starting to find their groove with dominant forward play from captains Meki Sosefo (Year 13) and Waka Tate (Year 13), while winger Ezekiel Fa'aiuaso (Year 12) proved to be a handful on the edge, carving down the wider channels. Despite a resurgent effort, St Paul’s were not able to add to their sole try from the first half, with a late try to Grammar to be the only points from the second half. Final score was 36-7. A good learning for our young men, that you cannot afford to be 1% off your game against quality teams, however the spirit to fight back  in the second half and to reduce Grammar to just one try showed this team has the ability to compete and win against top Auckland schools.
