Badminton

Congratulations to Neil Fernandes (Captain), Jezza Al-Nuaimi, Kaira Tupuola-Castle, Josh Benoza (Vice Captain), and Miguel Gazo who placed 3rd in their grade this season. This is the highest ranking our badminton team has had yet and reflects the commitment of this playing group.

Thank you to Mrs D'Souza for managing our badminton team for our 3rd consecutive season.

Basketball

A special shout out to Larenz Pua as he participated in the U16 National Tournament with Basketball Auckland over the school break.

Playing representative basketball for any association is a fantastic achievement, and competing at a National Level is a brilliant effort.

Central Zone Netball

Well done to the team who took part in the Central Zone Netball on Tuesday 30 July. The all-day event is a new sport for the school, and this is our second year of playing. The team finished 10th on the day, an improvement from last year.

Special mention to Jireh Lemalu for being our top score, and to Braxton Kalati and Dylan Keereweer for their excellent play throughout the day. Playing and experiencing new sports is key to the growth of our young men, and this was a prime example of how of students can be successful in anything we attempt. And thank you to tall parents who support don the day, and especially to Rachael Keereweer for her help as a Netball Coach.

Well done to our 11 young men; Ayden Figota, Preston Gourdie, David Hunuki-Hurt, Braxton Kalati, Dylan Keereweer-Taia, River Kelly Leilua, Tino Leaoa, Jireh Lemalu, Alex Ma’afu, Israel McGlynn and Lauchlan Paealiki.

Rugby

1st XV began Term 3 at home against Kelston Boys.

St Paul's started well, playing field position early, as both teams looked to build momentum. St Paul's drew first points from the boot of La'auli Sipia (Year 12), who kicked a penalty from 30m out. The lead was short lived though, as Kelston’s forward pack surged through after an error from kick off, and after a number of phases, scored in the corner to take the lead to 7-3. Another try to Kelston before halftime, stretched the lead to 15-3. Second half, St Paul's could only add a further 3 points as the bigger Kelston pack proved too much for the SPL, who went on to dominate the second half. The final score 45-6.

The following day, the team backed up with a game against Warwick School who were on a Australasian tour from England. This school has been in existence for 1110 years, making boys school in England. The game was played in excellent conditions on Western Springs Stadium. This was the catalyst for attacking free flowing rugby, and St Paul's didn’t disappoint. Despite a tough loss the day before, the team was able to put on a performance which had been missing for a number of weeks. Sebastian Smith (Year 12) scoring a handful tries to restore confidence back into the team after a tough season so far. Mita Tate (Year 10), Siokatame Kali (Year 11) and Jerimyah Elone (Year 12) all made their 1st XV debuts, as St Paul’s went on to score 8 tries to win 55-0. It was a game played in good competitive spirit, and an experience our young men will remember for the rest of their lives.

1st XV management would like to thank all our supporters, and sponsors, and a special thanks to Pete Leulusoo from Ponsonby Rugby Club for allowing us to use their facilities.
